What are you hoping to experience at the first Portfolio Night in Dublin?

“A great sense of energy, enthuasism mixed in with a big chunk of experience. I love this business of ours.”

Do you prefer to look at work on a laptop or in a physical portfolio?

“I love the smell of print in the morning! I like the physical portfolio, nothing like turning the pages of a book. You also get an insight into how its crafted.”

What the coolest thing somebody has done to get your attention (besides having an amazing portfolio)?

“Richard Ryan sent in a letter. It had the best beginning, middle and end we ever got. We hired him the following week. He’s now a CD in Ogilvy NYC. He told me it took him six months to craft. I could well believe that, it was great.”

“I also hired his missus; she’s a great writer too.”

What’s the first thing a junior needs to know about working at your agency?

“No one in this business got famous between the hours of 9 to 5. And if you’re not here on Saturday, don’t bother coming in on Sunday.”

When reviewing a portfolio with a young creative, are you more of the type to look at the entire thing before making comments or asking questions, or do you prefer to chat and inquire throughout the process?

“I go through the book form start to finish, then from finish to start. I do it in silence. Then we talk about IDEAS. If the book needs more work, I always leave the door open to come back and review again.”

What’s your favorite medium to work in and why?

“My favorite medium is the poster / 48 / 96 sheet. You cant hide. If it works on a poster it will work anywhere. Believe it or not, I always start work on that medium.”
